How Do I Stain My Hardwood Floors?

Oil Based Stain

You can you oil based stain on your hardwood floors. This is applied with an stain applicator. The wood floors have to be sanded to 100 grit. Start at a low grit of sanding paper and work your way up to 100 grit. Just do not jump up more than to grit grades at a time. A good grit to start is 40 grit followed by 60 grit, 80, and 100 grit. Use a drum sander and edger on all grits. Use the drum sander first than use the edger last.

After the hardwood floors have been sanded with all your grits, buff the floors with a screen. Vacuum up the floors and use a tack cloth to wipe off fine dust. Than you floors are ready to be water popped.  Water popping is when you use a mop and apply water to the hardwood floors to open up the grains. Just soak the floors and do not leave puddles.

How Many Days Do I Have To Let The Polyurethane Cure?

You must follow the manufacturers instructions as each polyurethane is different. The 2 key things you need to know when refinishing your floors is: The Cure Time and Walking Time.

Cure Time

Cure time is when the floors has completed "cured" all the way through. You can still walk on the floors and place back furniture. You just have to wear socks and be careful not to drag anything as the floors can get scuffed. Most of the time people walk on the floors before they are completely cured as they dont have to move into their home.

Walking Time

Is the time you can walk on the floors as mentioned above. The polyurethane has not completely cured but the product states you can still walk on the floors in "light traffic" Again, you can walk on the floors and place back furniture (usually 24hrs) and it is not a problem. Just check the polyurethane specs to go with their recommendations. They have polyurethanes out now that are completely cured in 24hrs if you are really concerned about the durability.

Does Sanding And Refinishing  Hardwood Floors Create Dust?

A lot of dust is created when refinishing your wood floors unless a "dustless" vacuum system is used. Wood Vitalize  carries all dustless equipment and sanding tools. There is no dust when the project is going or after completion.

Dustless sanding and refinishing of wood floor involves the right equipment and techniques. Regular edgers, drum machines, and palm sanders are not dustless.

Hepa filters remove the dust while the sanding is going on. This eliminates all debris and air contaminates.

How Many Layers Of Polyurethane Should I Use When Refinishing My Wood Floors?

There is one very simple answer. When refinishing your hardwood floors it is recommended that you use 3 layers of polyurethane and 1 coat of sealer. What Is The Best Polyurethane To Use On My Hardwood Floors?

The best polyurethane's to use on your hardwood floors are water based commercial polyurethanes such as Bona, Loba, or Street Shoe. These finishes go on after the wood floors have been sanded.

The polyurethane will leave the wood looking light and natural. If you want a color add a stain. Do not worry about which polyurethane is the best. Once you get up to the commercial level there all great products and it becomes a matter of opinion on behalf of the refinisher.

How Much Does It Cost To Refinish Hardwood Floors In New York, NYC, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx,
Staten Island, and Westchester County in 2020?

Hardwood floor refinishing cost will depend on the exact conditions of your hardwood floors. Most professional floor craftsman will need to see the floors before giving a price. This way they don't give you one price and than give you a significantly higher price after they are in your home or begin working.

The pricing will depend on the current stains, polyurethanes, waxes, or any other material that is on the floors. Some of these materials can take longer to sand off than others. Different machines and product amounts are used for different scenarios. Not all floors are the same.

Cost Of Hardwood Floor Refinishing.
There can be a very big range of pricing in the hardwood floor refinishing market. You have light refinishing or major refinishing (custom stain/bleaching/high end material/spot repairs/stairs/railings etc..) There is really no exact number you can rely as each situation is different.

parquet hardwood floor refinishing and pricing

Parquet floors as seen in the picture above, is just one example of why your hardwood floor refinishing would cost more. This type of wood takes longer to sand than regular straight boards. Also, staining parquet floors take longer than regular straight board wood flooring. Does the parquet have damage, is loose, have gaps, and is evenly level? These are just some the things that go into pricing and time.

Websites can never give out exact amounts for hardwood floor refinishing because there is none. You'll see such a huge range in wood floor pricing such as $3-$11 a square foot. But how can this help you? In the end, just be very clear to find out pricing with the wood floor refinishing company. Tell them if you are looking for a quick job without a lot of durability and the highest quality (or somewhere in between) or if you want the best service for your hardwood floors that is possible.

Can I Stain My Hardwood Floors White?

Yes, you can stain your hardwood floor's white. The whiteness will depend on the species of wood. But not all woods are created equal. Natural tones will mix in with the white stain. There is no wood the will give you a clear white color without bleaching.

White Bleach Wood Floors Refinishing

If you have a red oak wood flooring, the pink will show through with the white stain. If you have white oak the browns and yellow will show through the stain. If you want a true white, you will have to bleach the floors.

Bleaching it a long process and will significantly raise the price of your hardwood floor refinishing project. A lot of the time the natural tones mixing in with the white looks nice and doesn't bother the customer. Samples as always is best.
